Jan Nattier is an American scholar and professor emerita of Buddhist Studies at Indiana University. She is known for her research on early Buddhism, especially the development of Mahayana Buddhism and its relationship with Theravada Buddhism.
Nattier received her PhD from the University of Paris in 1979 and began teaching at Indiana University in 1991, where she was also the director of the Buddhist Studies Program. She has written numerous articles and books on Buddhist studies, including "A Few Good Men: The Bodhisattva Path According to the Inquiry of Ugra" and "The Making of the Buddha: Images of the Buddha in Buddhism and the World Beyond."
In addition to her contributions to Buddhist scholarship, Nattier has also been active in promoting interfaith dialogue and understanding between Buddhists and Christians.
